Waseela-e-Haq scheme launched to help the poor escape poverty

ISLAMABAD: Launching the “Waseela-e-Haq” scheme under the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) on Tuesday, President Asif Ali Zardari said it would grant the nation’s poor a once-in-a-lifetime chance to extricate themselves from poverty. The “Waseela-e-Haq” loan programme will be awarded through a computerised draw using a list compiled from the BISP and will grant an interest-free loan of Rs 300,000 to the poor. The loan will be repayable in monthly instalments over a period of 12 to 15 years. Addressing the inauguration ceremony, the president said the BISP had been designed to be more than a mere poverty alleviation programme. “It will be a comprehensive social protection scheme, and a platform for female empowerment,” he said, adding it would also provide health and accident insurance, vocational training and interest-free financing to help the poor become self-sufficient. zulfiqar ghuman
